The Mask Museum shows part of its collections in the exhibition « Carnivals » in Caen

From 17 October, the « Musée de Normandie » organises a new temporary exhibition dedicated to European carnivals. We are particularly happy and honored to collaborate on this project.

In total, more than 50 objects from our collections have left our storage rooms and travelled to Caen where they will stay for the duration of the exhibition.

« Carnivals » gives the visitor the opportunity to dive into this period of collective madness, to understand the role of the carnivals, their local particularities, their key caracters and the disguises. Carnival is a festival of excessive behaviour, a ritualized event, a space of liberty, often accompanied by noise, music and dance which can also be discovered in the exhibition.

Carnival is tumultuous in Caen, majestic in Nice, untamed in Sardinia, laughing in Granville… all these numerous variations are carnival and characterize it. This exhibition unveils carnival, its historical origines, its rites and mysteries.
